Assistant accountant

About the Role

We are looking for a motivated and detail-oriented Assistant Accountant to join our finance team in Gateshead. This role will support the senior accounting staff with day-to-day financial operations and provide an excellent opportunity for someone looking to develop their accounting career within a supportive environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist with the preparation of monthly management accounts
  • Process purchase and sales invoices
  • Perform bank and balance sheet reconciliations
  • Support VAT returns and HMRC submissions
  • Assist with payroll processing
  • Maintain accurate financial records and documentation
  • Support budgeting and forecasting activities
  • Assist with year-end accounts and liaise with external accountants or auditors
  • Respond to finance-related queries internally and externally

Requirements

  • Previous experience in an Assistant Accountant or similar finance role
  • Basic understanding of UK accounting principles
  • Experience using accounting software (e.g. Xero, Sage, QuickBooks)
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel
  • Strong attention to detail and organisational skills
  • Ability to work to deadlines and manage multiple tasks

Desirable

  • AAT qualification (or working towards)
  • Experience in a small to medium-sized business environment
